Abortion is a very sensitive topic, which has been subjected to numerous debates for a long time. The disputes over its comprehension arise mostly from the roots of morality and righteousness. While some argue that women must possess a choice for giving the birth, others point towards the killing of a potential human being. The level of understanding and perception differs from community to community and state to state, something that complicates the subject even more. Nevertheless, the definition of abortion remains the same. I will argue that abortion is ethically wrong and shouldn’t be practised under any circumstance.
Abortion is equivalent to murdering a fully grown human being. There are various arguments as to whether to consider the fetus as a human being or simply a living form that can be a potential person. This statement in both the scenarios labels the organism as living and therefore, people have no right to kill a living form. According to the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, the status of an embryo or a fetus is similar to that of a common human being. Therefore, killing of an unborn living being is a crime and that anyone intentionally practising it should “be punished.”(National Right to Life Committee, 2004).
Before the enactment of this law, the murders associated with pregnant women were subjected to punishing the responsible only for the murder of the women. However, after the regulatory bodies formulated the law, it has been textualised that anyone responsible for the death of a pregnant woman would be charged for the murder of the woman and her unborn child. This has been done to eliminate the injustice caused to the unborn child. Moreover, the sacred texts teach us that life begins at conception. (Dougherty, 2001) A person telling that abortion is “okay” is perhaps, the biggest materialistic attribute that resides in our society. This kind of perception has led to the death of many unborn living beings, which is something that totally opposes the righteous living that we boast of.
Abortion is highly likely to cause psychological damage. No wants to see their dear ones suffering from mental illness yet people don’t hesitate to put women into the operations that can entirely destroy their peace of mind. Recent studies suggest that women who undergo abortion are the closest to be engulfed by depression. Considering the number of increasing deaths due to depression, this is something that should be addressed immediately. A study carried out in Finland exhibited that women who underwent abortion were associated with higher death rates than the women who gave birth (Reardon et al., 2002).
The increasing death rates suggest that abortion is more or less related to both psychological and medical health. Most abortions take place without the consent of women, which completely destroys the standard ethics of life and leave no room for morality. Apart from this, a study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology studied college students, especially men and found that out of the 32 males investigated, more than 51% felt regret and about 45% felt sadness. (Coleman & Nelson, 1998). This is highly reflective of the remorse that people confront when they become prey to abortion. Even after effectively analysing the pre- and post-abortion scenario, people hardly get over the trauma in their forthcoming clips.
Abortion is one of the significant reasons why the world is saturated with the thought process that human life is disposable. In simpler words, killing an unborn child reflects the same practises that humans carry out against the other species. They erase everyone that comes in the way of their comfortable life, something that predominantly defines the dominant and unstable mindset that people possess towards this nature. Randy Hultgren aligns his words aptly against the sufferings imposed and says, “When we tell one another that abortion is okay, we reinforce the idea that human lives are disposable, that we can throw away anything or anyone that inconveniences us.” (Hultgren, 2014) For instance, we regularly violate human rights by killing animals for making products and stuffing the eateries. Some would argue that it disrupts the food chain if we don’t regulate the animal living; however, it is a topic of high-end discussion that doesn’t restrict itself to mere food chain regulation. It demands reasonable assertions that can justify the injustice caused to the other species. Likewise, abortion demands analytical affirmations for why it is being practised. But then again, the analysis points towards the violation of moral conformism. Nevertheless, the arguments go in vain and humans think that they should continue to do what they are doing. However, there’s no denying that people practise a throwaway culture that accurately supports the disposable scenario discussed above.
There’s a huge debate on the fetus being a person or a life form and most people might argue that moral standards don’t comply with killing a life form that is to become a potential person. Also, as the human mindset comprehends, the objection might rule out the vitality of fetus’s future. As Nathan Nobis explicates in The Ethics of Abortion, “Fetuses have no awareness of their futures whatsoever, and this is one important difference between their futures and our futures.” (Nobis, 2016) However, this doesn’t eliminate the fact that fetus can have a future and killing it is equivalent to seizing an individual’s right to accomplish, love and live. Also, the argument that fetus might not be a human is false because human life commences from the day a fetus comes to life. Recent researches have shown that once a fetus “is beyond 20 weeks of gestation” it can feel “excruciating pain.” (Paul, 2008)
Hence, abortion is a torture of the highest degree. Also, the holy texts bring about no difference in the state of a baby and a fetus. Almost all the religious testaments reject abortion and compare it to destroying the life of loved ones. The Hindu texts go as far as commenting that “Abortion is an equivalent misdeed to killing one’s own parents.” (Subramuniyaswami, 1993). Last but not least, abortion majorly affects the medical condition of a mother. Doctors have found out that most women who experience miscarriages have had abortions in the past. Not only this, abortion is one of the main reasons for causing breast cancer in women. (Huang et al, 2014).
In the modern day, abortion has infiltrated the domain of politics. Every party that comes to power has its own perspective as to why allow or deny the practices. This is the reason why most countries have banned or illegalised abortion whereas, some states still permit the people to practise it for their comfort. There are various debates that correspond to abortion being “morally wrong”, “often wrong” and “always wrong”. On analysing a good part of the perceptions, it becomes clear that the comprehension of abortion is obscure. However, there’s no denying that it doesn’t comply with humanity constraints because it involves the killing of a life form. In no way, it is an appropriate method to proceed with a comfortable life.
