Organizational Culture and Readiness: Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal

Healthcare institutions adopt evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes, provide quality and patient-centered care. To effectively adapt the evidence-based practice, the institution must identify facilitators and barriers that may affect the implementation procedure (Randall et al., 2019). Every health institution has its unique personality. This unique personality of the institution is what is referred to as culture. Therefore, organizational culture is the system of assumptions, beliefs, values that regulate how individuals behave (Randall et al., 2019). These shared beliefs and values considerably impact how people behave or dress in an institution and their performance. Every institution develops and creates its unique culture that governs the behavior of the members of the institution.

How Organization Culture Supports Change

Organizational culture supports change in different ways, such as helping the institution attract the right talents and outperforming its competitors. Before any person applies for a job in any institution, the person first considers the institution’s culture. Therefore, the organizational culture will support an effective change because employees can leave the organization to a less-paying institution with a favorable culture. The culture also supports change by increasing employee engagement in all areas of the institutions. Clear expectations and purposes are what drives a work environment that possesses an organizational culture. Therefore, inspiring employees to be actively engaged in their work and accept organizational change.

Organization Readiness

To determine the organization’s readiness for change the system-wide integration tool was used to investigate, evaluate, and ascertain the organization’s readiness. The organization was able to determine that the organization was well prepared to implement the evidence-based practice (Roos & Nilsson, 2020). This tool is significant in identifying the organization’s weaknesses and developing the appropriate strategies that enhance the organization’s readiness. According to the organizational assessment based on the survey, it is evident that the organization is ready to implement the EBP. To ensure the success of the EBP implementation, the nurses should have the commitment, drive, and knowledge about the EBP (Roos & Nilsson, 2020). The physicians should also give their perception on the success of the EBP and ascertain whether the EBP will enhance the quality of patient care and whether they will support it. Additionally, the organization should have sufficient resources to ensure that there is enough and broad scope of research.

Barriers

Furthermore, the assessment has identified barriers, such as insufficient time to conduct the research and produce accurate information. The facilitators of the EBP increased access to appropriate information and excellent organizational leadership (Alatawi et al., 2020). The second barrier is a limited number of experienced staff because most of the staff available do not have sufficient knowledge and experience to participate in EBP. Additionally, there are insufficient resources to help complete the EBP implementation. The institution will face barriers from the upper manager trying to gate approval to invest in specific EBP. Besides that, experienced nurses show no interest in the EBP because they feel the change is unnecessary or do not understand why the organization requires it (Alatawi et al., 2020). Therefore, to end the project barriers, nurses, physicians and managers should work together to implement the EBP.

Improving The Quality, Safety, and Cost-Effectiveness of an Institution

Additionally, to improve quality care in the organization it is essential to set goals. The organization should create measurable goals in all areas that require improvement (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). The organization should also develop a balanced team that is from all backgrounds with different skills and experiences. All the plans they make should be executable to achieve their goals promptly. Moreover, to improve patient safety, the organization will have to incorporate a monitoring technology to help nurses and physicians verify that they are always adhering to the correct procedures for each patient (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020).  Making sure patients are aware and understand their treatment is significant for their safety and also verify all medical strategies. Cost efficiency is significant in the organization; hence it is vital to always look for patient care techniques and prioritize patient experience (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020).

Strategies to Facilitate Readiness of an Organization

Defining change and aligning it with business goals is paramount in facilitating the readiness of an organization to change. This ensures that change gets channeled in the right direction of the institution (Sharplin et al., 2019). The organization should also determine the impacts and those that will get affected by the change. This is through getting to know the purpose of change and its effects on different levels of the organization. The organization should also develop an effective communication strategy. This is the first step because employees must know what is happening to avoid resisting the change.

Stakeholders of The Project

There are different stakeholders in EBP whose roles are also different. The first stakeholder is the manager. The manager’s role in planning, organizing, controlling, staffing, and directing Kabukye et al., 2019). The second stakeholder is the finance department. The department is responsible for managing and acquiring the organization’s funds. It also plans for the expenditure of organization money in various assets. The third stakeholders are the patients, whose role is to follow the orders received. For the success of the EBP, nurses can use electronic medical health records (Kabukye et al., 2019). This technology will help in the storage of essential patient information and prevent it from getting misplaced.  Through this technology, nurses will offer high-quality care because all patient information is available. The new technology will also change how the nurses plan and review clinical care. Additionally, it will also help improve patient safety because the organization safely keeps all information concerning a specific patient.
