Celebrating Kuwait

The National Day is here with us, and I can’t help but think of my home country, Kuwait. It is a good country, the people are wonderful, and generally the country has a lot to offer with respect to the rich culture, amazing dishes as well as the beautiful sceneries and buildings. The State of Kuwait is located in Eastern Arabia, at the tip of the Persian Gulf, bordering South Arabia to the South and Iraq to the North. It’s an Islamic state, and majority of the country’s population are Muslims, but you will also find a small percentage of the natives belonging to Baha’i and Christian faith. The people are governed by Islamic civil law.

Arabic is the national language, and the people are friendly and live in harmony. It is customary for the people to offer Salaam (greetings). Celebrations are common, and they are usually conducted in accordance to Islamic faith. The fasting month of Ramadan is strictly observed, and it is also a time to engage in charity, and reach out to the vulnerable people in the society.  Most people get to spend time with both the immediate and extended family. The end of the fast is celebrated with feasting on traditional Kuwaiti dishes such as, Matchboush (rice with meat or chicken) flavored with different seasonings and Muteble (fish with rice and some carrots). Other notable celebrations include national holidays. These are marked by parades, fighter jets shows and water fights on the streets.

Some of the beautiful sites to visit while in Kuwait include; the Bayaan palace, Kuwait towers, Liberation Tower, and Avenue mall. A walk through the cities and towns will allow you a glimpse of house styles with beautiful oriental architecture. In conclusion all these sceneries, culture and vibrant spirit of the citizens make me so proud to be a Kuwaiti.
