Required Underlying Technologies

The Controls to put in Place to Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Proposed Solution and the Effectiveness of the Implementation

To counter the increasing number of Covid-19 cases at Chapman University, there is a need to implement new technology. The new technology will ensure the students and all the visitors are thoroughly screened, and those vaccinated are recorded in the database. The controls to be put in place should incorporate a room that allows one person per card to be scan. These solutions include a magstripe with information showing the person’s vaccination status to be used together with the existing door scanners (Nakajima et al., 2020). Scanners should be fitted on the doors in all school buildings. People should only be allowed to enter the buildings after being verified by magstripe. To make the magstripe effective, they should detect people supposed to be in school on a particular day. Some technologies to be implemented to solve the ensuing problem should include magstripe reprogrammer, mobile health apps, magstripe activatable locks on doors, Infrared Walk, which detects body temperature, and a database record the students’ status and faculty body information.

The new solution should be implemented immediately to coincide with the fall of summer, when students are expected to be back in school. To achieve this, the management should record all the vaccine information into the database. This information should include the number of persons vaccinated and those yet to be vaccinated. There is also the need to reprogram the current student ID cards with the magstripe. The student’s ID cards should be used to access closed doors within the school premises. To capture more people within the database, there is a need to keep maintaining and upgrading the system; more people are expected to record their vaccination status with the database.

The infrared walk-through scanners can be used to detect temperatures of persons for possible follow up of Covid 19 cases. The people to be screened had to go through the detector one at a time. The non-thermal imaging sensor does the tracking while the screen displays the temperature of each individual. If the person’s temperature exceeds a certain limit, the system sets the alarm. The mobile health apps can be essential in contact tracing and monitoring symptoms related to Covid 19. Other health apps have been used to create awareness about the pandemic and how people can combat its spread. People can use the technology in self-tracking their health as well as in self-assessing. The student ID has a chip that creates systemic forces when placed against the magstripe on the door. When the card comes in contact with the reader, it dictates the magnetic field which generates the voltage used in the chip. The information on the card is read and transmitted to a server within the building, which verifies whether the card is permitted to open the door. The server then sends a response to the reader to initiate the door latch.

With the new technology, issues are likely to arise; most people are unfamiliar with the new system. All the people accessing the school premises should undergo training to accustom them to the new technology. This training should include showing them how to use the student ID cards to access the closed doors within the premises and feed their information in the database without seeking helpdesk assistance. Moreover, some of the cards may experience technical issues- being unable to open the closed doors. This problem may be a result of filling out incorrect information in the database. It is good for the person experiencing this problem to seek helpdesk assistance to fix the issue. The necessity of students having to carry their ID cards can be addressed by introducing a system where they can verify their status through their digital version of the card accessible by the phone (Wagner et al., 2002).

By incorporating all these measures and technology, Chapman University will enjoy a seamless transition to enable the management to counter the spread of Covid-19. The new system will be effective only if the persons within the school follow the laid down protocols of controlling Covid 19.
