Self-critical individuals often blame themselves when things go wrong (12). They are guilty and ashamed when they make mistakes because they believe the errors are as a result of their shortcomings which then leads to depression. Self-criticism also comes in the way of essential relationships because the individual may end up projecting the negative feelings to other people (Ehret, Joorman & Barking 7). A self-critical individual tends to expect negative feedback from other people. Such expectations can force the individual into isolation and loneliness.
Self-criticism is advantageous to the individual when the individual uses it as a tool to identify their mistakes and failures. Self-criticism is also essential when looking for ways to improve oneself and to cultivate humility and change for the better. Therefore, self-criticism is better than criticism from other people. However, self-criticism may inhibit growth. Self-criticism can be a mental health hazard when it affects the individual’s ability to thrive. It is thus necessary that individuals evaluate how they criticize themselves for establishing whether their self-criticism is positive or negative. Individuals should aim for positive self-criticism because it improves self-awareness, mental health, and personal relationships.
