Social History of Physical Education and Sport

Physical education and sports fail to feature in the education systems in most of the countries. Particularly, the developing nations are short of these educations, and their system does not put more emphasis on it. Contrary, the well-developed state have policies that are put in place, to guide and instruct the institutions on how to leverage sports, for shaping students to become adaptable to different environments in the market. With that said, it’s paramount to mention that physical education and sport have gone transitions since the World War II. For example, presently, sports are considered a source of income and retention of power in the global arena. In some time back, the people engaging in this of activities were primarily guided by the need to remain fit and sometimes introduced in school as a corrective measure.  However, the discipline aspect of it has not been lost, and it’s still in use.

Before the world war two, the physical education and sport had an impact on the ways the students behaved. According to the research conducted by Braden and Janice (2017), the chief question that is posed by this article is whether the sports and physical education have an impact in molding the students into responsible citizens? The administration introduced the hockey team because they believed it would have significant input, in developing the young brains that were focused in school. The major intention of adopting the strategy was to divert the attention of students, who in some instances are pressured by the school workload resulting in dropping out or indiscipline. As opposed to modern believes that sports are only meant for health purpose, the traditional stand that was put across by Braden and Janice(2017), aimed to highlight on the need of passing the educational value of hard work for future employment prospects. Some of the traits that would be inculcated to the young people are: obedience, good morals and resilience.  To answer the question, the author uses a high percentage of journals, which are highly commendable for research work. This is because they give current information that is more reliable. Therefore, the assertion that sport and physical education could be used for corrective purpose is highly cited by the different authors.

The major question that is put across by the work of Jenny (2015), is whether Terry Fox was really a unifying factor in Canada? Jenny affirms that the athlete did not represent the country in the right manner, and championed for his own advances rather than what the majority thought. The article suggest of setting a race of ten kilometers across Canada, to bring the thoughts and ideas of the later athlete to the minds of the people. This would be done with intention of enticing the talented people to follow the path of Terry, and also bring them together for a common agenda. The work of Jenny (2015) uses the sources from journals, media articles and books. They have given the whole concept a good argument, and the reader is able to hold a particular position based on the facts given by different researchers.

As observed, the physical education and sport have changed over time. What is being experienced in the current times differs from what was there before the Second World War. The paramount interest for financing and embracing sport is to improve the trade among the nations. Athletes are core people, who are used by their respective countries to spread the message to other nations, regarding their suitability in engaging in business.  For this to happen, the participants are well trained and facilitated, to win and become notable in the media. Just like the past where some schools used hockey to attract students, the same principle is employed in this case. The success of the person in the competition is assumed to be that of the whole nation since other people get interested to know more about the winning state.  Conclusively, there is more interest in physical education and sport as the time goes by. Nations are finding it important to improve this sector, due to the benefits that are witnessed thereof such as increased revenue.
