Texas Gubernatorial Seat Contestants

Texas Gubernatorial Seat Contestants

At the heart of the fabric that holds the United States of America together is  the exercise of democracy. In exercising democracy, the midterm elections are constitutionally provided for; the intention of this provision is to grant voters a chance to elect their leader in a credible and democratic election. The Texas Gubernational seat is up for contention in the midterm elections, and as is the custom of American politics the race is between Greg Abbott vying on a Republican party ticket and Lupe Valdez vying on a Democrat party ticket.

Gregg Abbott

Greg Abbott, the current governor of Texas, seeks to continue building on his proven track record of conservative leadership. His vision for Texas includes; creating more jobs, improving the schools and education system, building transport infrastructure needed to stimulate and guarantee the growth of the economy within the Texas border.

Greg’s vision stems from the understanding that, ‘ it is Washington that is broken, not America, and that Texas must lead the way for our nation(Abbott 2018).’ Additionally, Governor Abbott maintains his conservative values of faith, family, and freedom.

Abbott’s Policies

Governor Abbott’s commitment is building a better future for all Texans. Having delivered on the promises he made in his first term, the governor seeks to build on the progress.

Economic growth: the governor’s track record in stimulating economic growth through friendly policies, his commitment towards job creation saw 500, 000 new jobs created. He has also repealed $250 million worth professional fees that were barriers to getting jobs.

Second Amendment: Abbot believes the right to keep and bear arms should be respected. He is also on record appearing in the case of District of Columbia v Heller; that abolished the handgun ban and protected the individuals right to bear arms.

Education: the governor is committed to providing and improving the quality of education in Texas. The education sector has grown significantly during his tenure through policies that have seen the number of students graduating from High school and college increase(Grommer 2018).

Protecting the vulnerable in society; Gregg believes in the right to life, and that life should be protected including the lives of the vulnerable unborn children. As an open critique of abortion, the governor’s policies have increased the funding for adoption services and intends to prevent cities and counties from using tax dollars to fund abortions.

Lupe Valdez

Lupe Valdez is the Democratic Nominee for Governor of Texas and has enjoyed an illustrious career from a migrant farm worker to serving as the Sheriff of Dallas County. Lupe Valdez’s vision is for building a new Texas where everyone has a fair chance of getting ahead. She believes that achieving this level of sobriety demands for unity, strict adherence to the Bill of Rights, and strengthening the economic security of the state of Texas (Valdez 2018).

Issues and proposed policies

Veterans:  veterans returning home from war deserve more than what is offered. Currently heroes return home and lack access to health care, sustainable housing, and reintegration services. This situation is unacceptable because these individuals have made massive sacrifices for the country, they deserve dignified treatment and respect not as a courtesy but as a right which they have earned.

Voting rights; at the core of democracy is the right to vote. Currently, democracy in Texas has come under threat from Governor Abbott’s policies that have made it harder for eligible Texas citizens to vote, through voter identification laws. Lupe argues that these policies are discriminatory and are aimed at guaranteeing the Governor’s re-election(Ratcliffe 2018).

Second amendment rights:  Lupe holds and strongly believes in the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment. However, she believes that there should be restrictions as to who can wield a weapon, especially for people who are prone to resulting to violence as a means of resolving their disputes.

Immigration; Lupe holds that the fear-based approach being enforced by President Donald Trump and Gregg Abbott are detrimental to immigrant communities and the country’s economy. More so, she believes that these policies are not a reflection of the values that Americans and Texans hold dear. Lupe proposes, the enactment of comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship.
