History of Public Health in Chicago

Public health forms the center part ofconsideration in Chicago due to the surging population and the consequent increase of the population in the cities. As time progresses, the population is snowballing, and so is the prevalent of being exposed to infections. In a bid to secure the health of the individuals, early sanitation regulations established in the late 1850s were re-evaluated, to control the spread of diseases (Erica, 2013). During this era of reforms, a number of activities were primarily focused on ensuring the surrounding was clean for human habitation. Among the changes that were established included water analysis, enhancing food and dairy quality, and managing sewer(Erica,2013). However, the focus has changed and transitioned to modern problems, which includes HIV, and control of other infectious diseases.

As the public health conditions change, so did the organizations mandated with the sustenance of a healthy society transformed. The first board of health was formed in the year1834, to deal with the challenges of cholera and smallpox. After which, it was abolished in the year 1857 and re-emerged again by the year 1867(Healthy Chicago, n.d). Currently, there are different departments whose functions ensure that there is safe water to drink, proper disposal of sewer, among others.

The public health department in Chicago has always defined itself relative to others (Healthy Chicago, n.d). They work in conjunction with supplementary parties interested in bringing the health of the populace into stability. Such groups include nurses and doctors, who spread the information regarding the appropriate living lifestyle that minimizes the chances of getting infections.
