Immigrants Dilemma
Immigration refers to the movement of people to a foreign country of which they are not natives, hence do not possess citizenship or the requisite documentation to settle or reside there(Weber, 2015). Immigration has in the recent past received much negative attention stemming from the burden imposed on the host country in sustaining the immigrants and criminal activities often associated with illegal immigrants.
Based on the preceding definition, immigration occurs as a consequence of factors beyond the realm of influence of the immigrant. These factors include; social reasons, political reasons, and economic reasons. Hence, the justification for any immigrant revolves around these factors.
Social reasons
One of the primary social justifications for immigration is a pursuit for a better and quality life. As such the decision to migrate is coerced by the limited opportunities in the immigrants home country. The opportunity for providing a safer environment for their families, access to better health services, and career growth are major contributors of social migration.
Economic reasons
The pursuit of career growth and added career opportunities is a major contributor of migration. Immigrants prefer seeking job opportunities in foreign countries because of better remuneration, which in turn gives them the power to give their family a better life.
Political Reasons
Politics and policies of the government of the day have the power to grow or ruin a country. The growth of a country is dependent on the government implementing policies that attract investors and stimulate economic growth. In contrast, the politics of the government of the day may trigger a civil war, or genocide making the country inhabitable. Those who dare speak or act against the government face the danger of being killed, and flee the country as political refugees.
Coping in a Foreign Land
Deciding to move permanently to a foreign country is hard, but living in a foreign country as an immigrant is harder. Immigrants face numerous hurdles ranging from administration issues, citizenship issues, cultural shock, and strained finances(Barsky, 2016). However, depending on the circumstances surrounding their immigration, immigrants prefer to deal with these hurdles as compared to living in their home country.
Immigrants are often greeted to a hostile reception from all quotas of society; these include social, economic and political. The justification for this hostility is immigrants are viewed as an added burden on society and on a country’s economy. In most instances, the country’s hands are tied by the international treaties that it is a signatory to.
As an immigrant, the most important thing to remember is that you are a visitor and that your actions or omissions may end your stay in the host country. Keeping this in mind, all my actions or omissions would be based on the legal ramifications that they attract, this is to mean that I would not engage in any illegal activities.
Societal hostility based on bias has the effect of triggering anger, again I would exercise caution to avoid all circumstances that would trigger this likelihood. In the case that it is unavoidable, I would exercise self-discipline and remain friendly despite the hostility.
Finally, as an immigrant, I would make a personal commitment to keep my head down, and not raise any unnecessary attention. I would go about my day performing every task expected of me to the best of my ability and try to make friends with the citizens of the host nation in a bid to beat the cultural shock.
