Career Path, Organization Growth and Employee Performance

Introduction

An organization is a progressive system of differentiated and coordinated human activities, which brings together resources into a whole and then develops a character of its own (Baumüller, 2007). An organization is also a collection of individuals engaged in purposive, goal-seeking activities and emerges when the output produced by all persons working together as a team is greater than the sum of the outputs that each member of the organization could provide separately. Organizations operate as systems, whereby the system is a collection of two or more interrelated components in which each part has an impact on the functioning of the body. Also, each item in the organization is influenced by at least one factor in the body, and all potential subgroups of the elements affect the functioning of the entire group. This essay discusses how I would have my career growth in a company, and how to motivate and lead other employees in performing their roles to creating a highly performing team.

To identify and growth within the career path requires me to set clear goals and objectives. Also, to grow my career within an organization will require me to the nature of business structure and identify the ways through which to fit in it. Other factors within a company that I will need to consider and learn about are the number of departments and the functions of each of them, the positions of leadership in the firm and their duties and the organizational culture. Understanding the structure of the company will be important to know how to progress from the lowest to the highest positions within the enterprise. It will also enhance my career growth my following the set chain of command and the reporting hierarchies so that I will always follow the established structure.  Organizational culture refers to the firm’s shared values and beliefs, which influence the behavior of people within the enterprise. Culture affects how people act, interact with each other, dress, speak, and perform their roles. Having a good understanding of the culture will help me behave in the way other people expect of me and prevent conflict. Following the culture will also help in properly fitting in the organization and enhance career growth within the firm.

Career growth and strategy

On joining the company, I will set clear objectives and have a planned schedule to guide me in identifying what I will need to achieve in my career path while at the same time supporting the growth of the organization and motivating and leading employees to create a high-performance team. The strategy also involves having well designed, organized and well-developed continuous improvements to identify the skills learned and the ones necessary to learn. The improvements are needed to ensure that I have acquired the skills required to grow my career at an individual, team, and organizational levels. Some of the vital factors necessary for career development include self-development, acquiring the right skills and having the most relevant capabilities. My objectives will include both long term and short terms ones each with specific timelines. To ensure that I succeed within the organization I will be working with; I will make sure that the goals align with the organizational structure and culture.

My career path to support the team will also include acquiring a professional qualification. Professional qualification will involve engaging in continuous learning to keep pace with the organizational changes and ensure continued support for the company (Kumar, 2009). Professional development acquired through constant learning is an important aspect of a dynamic work environment. I will obtain both vocational and academic qualification by studying additional professional courses, attending training workshops, and other events that add my experience in the field.

How my career path will support the direction of the organization

Setting my career path will involve understanding the knowledge, skills, experience and personal characteristics that I require to progress my career upwards or through access to promotions or transfers. After joining the organization, I will make a plan to obtain what is necessary to carry out my career path within the firm. Having the necessary skills will help me to undertake my duties within the business efficiently and effectively. The skills will also help me to have good performance and significantly increase my chances of getting a promotion or a departmental transfer. The good individual performance will contribute to the overall company performance, which is one way of supporting the direction of the organization. My career path goals will involve rising to a position of management. On becoming a manager, I will use the acquired management capabilities to guide my subordinates to achieve the best possible results, a great contributor to supporting the company direction.

Achieving my career goals will involve commitment if following the set path. This means that I will need to be committed to the firm. Commitment is a force that assists one to keep the promise. There are three types of organizational commitment, affective, continuance, and normative. Affective is the workers feeling of attachment to the firm whereby the employee wants to continue working at the company (Cooper & Saridakis, 2013). A continuance means that the staff member needs to work in the firm because of the risk of leaving.  Normative is a worker’s feeling that they ought to stay in the business. In my career path, I will strive to cultivate affective commitment because it is has a positive correlation to organizational performance.

Employees’ motivation

Motivation is the readiness to exercise high levels of energy to reach organizational aims, combined with the person’s capacity to meet some personal need (Randhawa, 2007). It is also the willingness of an individual to use extra energy to achieve a goal or reward. Employee motivation refers to the level or energy, creativity, and commitment that the individuals working in a company show or apply while working for the enterprise. The motivation levels of employees are a significant determinant of their performance and the company performance. Motivating employees are one of the greatest concerns of management.

As a leader, I will place employees’ motivation as one of the priorities of my position because high employee motivation translates to better productivity and performance. One of the ways to do this will involve identifying the exact factors that will act as motivating factors. Identifying these factors will be crucial to know the precise ways through which to increase the motivation levels of the employees. I will also undertake periodic assessments of how well my motivating strategies are influencing the workers and take any corrective measures necessary. The motivating factors may change depending on the conditions and state of the organization, and this will require me to undertake a continuous evaluation to identify any new factors and eliminate the redundant ones. One of the factors that affect the motivation is organizational change. To overcome this, I will clearly communicate any potential changes in advance so that the staff will be aware, which will reduce the risk of resistance to change. The prior communication will give the subordinates to chance to ask their questions and raise their concerns, which will help me the time the opportunity to address their questions and issues before the changes take place. Such an approach will contribute to retaining the same or improve the level of motivation of the employees.

Leading employees to high performance

The performance by individual employees and the organization is essential for the survival of the company. One of the ways I will use to improve employee performance is identifying each of the individual employees’ capabilities and talents and helps them develop it. When the staffs reach their full potential in the workplace, it will significantly enhance their performance. Working at the full potential, increases organizational potential and seeing the full of their potential will also help to increase the worker’s motivation.

In my career path, I will embrace clear communication and give consistent feedback to the team I will be supervising. I have learned that people will always appreciate genuine interactions and straightforwardness from management. I will set a tone of sincerity that will allow the employees also to give their feedback, and embrace honest dialogue. This approach will help the team members to contact me whenever they have an issue, or in conflict with their colleagues. It will contribute to identifying the problems and matters that affect them and solve them before they can affect their performance negatively. This approach will also help increase the levels of employee performance engagement, which have been linked to superior organization performance including profitability, customer satisfaction, and high level of employee retention.
